Services

What a hydrovac truck does

Hydro excavation is the safe way to dig near buried gas lines, power, fibre and water. It’s used on construction sites, oil and gas leases, acreages and city streets.

Daylighting and potholing

Expose a buried line so you can see exactly where it is before you dig. More on daylighting.

Slot trenching

Narrow, clean trenches for cable, conduit or irrigation, with little damage to the yard.

Pile and post holes

Holes for screw piles, fence posts, signs and decks, cut close to existing utilities.

Frozen ground

Heated water cuts through frost, so winter work doesn’t have to wait.

Line repairs

Dig down to a sewer, water or service line for repair without tearing up the whole area.

Cleanouts

Vacuum out catch basins, sumps, valve boxes and pits.

  2. A local operator contacts you

  3. Get a price and book

The operator gives you a rate and an estimate of hours. There’s no obligation to book.

Before you dig

Request locates first

In Alberta, buried facilities are located through Utility Safety Partners. Submit a Click Before You Dig request online at least 3 to 5 days before the work, and earlier in the busy season from May to September. Remote areas and emergency or priority requests go by phone.

Locates mark the approximate path of a line. Hydrovac daylighting then exposes it so you know its exact depth and position.

Questions

Hydrovac questions

What is hydrovac excavation?

A hydrovac truck cuts the ground with pressurized water and vacuums the soil and water into a tank. Because nothing hard touches the ground, it can expose pipes and cables without damaging them.

Do I still need locates before a hydrovac?

Yes. Request locates through Utility Safety Partners (Click Before You Dig) at least 3 to 5 days before the work, longer from May to September. Emergency and priority requests go by phone at 1-800-242-3447.

Can a hydrovac dig in frozen ground?

Yes. Trucks heat the water, so they can excavate through frost in winter when a backhoe struggles. Expect it to take longer than in summer.

How is hydrovac priced?

Usually by the hour per truck, with a minimum charge, plus travel and disposal of the slurry. See how hydrovac pricing works.

Does this service cost anything?

No. Operators pay us a referral fee. You pay nothing to us, and you’re never obliged to book.
